The Local SEO Checklist Every Small Business Should Run Through
Local SEO is different from general SEO, you're not trying to outrank every website on the internet, just the other businesses in your service area. That's a much more winnable game, and most small businesses aren't even doing the basics. Here's where to start.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Fill in every field, category, hours, service area, photos, and keep it updated. An incomplete profile is the most common reason a legitimate local business doesn't show up in the map pack.
2. Match your name, address, and phone number everywhere
Your business info needs to be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, and any directory listing. Inconsistent formatting (a suite number in one place, missing in another) quietly undermines how confidently Google can associate those listings with your business.
3. Build pages around what customers actually search
If you offer multiple services in multiple areas, a single generic homepage won't rank for all of them. Dedicated pages, "emergency plumbing in [city]" or "wedding hair styling in [city]", give search engines something specific to match against specific searches.
4. Collect and respond to reviews
Review volume and recency are a meaningful local ranking signal, and responding to reviews (good and bad) signals an active, trustworthy business. Make it easy: send customers a direct link to your Google review page rather than asking them to find it themselves.
5. Make sure your site is actually fast on mobile
Most local searches happen on a phone, often while someone is already nearby and ready to act. A slow-loading site loses that customer before they ever see what you offer.
Where most businesses stall out
None of this is complicated, but it's easy to do halfway and then wonder why nothing changed. The businesses that actually move up in local search are the ones that treat this as ongoing maintenance, not a one-time setup task.
